James Athanassiou

James was introduced to Latin dancing as a child and he spent a year learning to dance every style available to him at Brisbane's Rio Rhythmics Latin Dance Academy. After breaking to concentrate on schooling he started dancing again in 2006 at Rio Rhythmics. He's trained in a variety of Latin styles such as Salsa, Mambo, Rumba, Samba, Forró, Bolero, Cha Cha, Tango and Bachata but his passions lie in Samba de Gafieira and Zouk-Lambada.

Since then his love of dance has lead him to leap on every opportunity available to him including training under Kadu Pires and Larissa Thayane for Latin and Brazilian styles, and training in contemporary and hip-hop to help augment his dancing and performing. In 2011 he moved to Melbourne, Australia where he began teaching and performing at Spin City Dance under Sharon Pakir. He has since trained heavily in Mambo and is the school's Brazilian dance expert.

After James moved to Melbourne in 2011 he began training with Sonia in Zouk-Lambada and Samba de Gafieira. Since then, the couple have taught and performed at local festivals such as the Adelaide Salsa Festival, Melbourne Latin Festival, Portsea Summer Latin Festival, Doudoule Latin Dance Camp, Sydney Latin Festival, and Brazil Central, and internationally in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, London, and Bali.

In addition to choreographing teams for Spin City Dance, James and Sonia are also solo performers and members of the Melbourne Samba Funkeado collaboration Funk Yeah.
